MARDI GRAS - Came early this year and not a moment too soon. We sailed along with the Krewe du Lac at this year's Royal Ball back on board The Spirit of Texas Paddlewheeler with party favorite, South Coast, rocking the deck the entire evening. Never a bunch to throw in the towel early, the Krewe dropped into Amadeus to wrap up the evening with Abel & Phil on stage serenading the night away and if that weren't enough...
The super staff at Bakkhus Taverna handily took the torch with ease hosting the annual Krewes into Kemah Kickoff Party. Rolling out the welcome mat, lighting up the heaters, firing off the Flamin' Saganaki, and unleashing Samone & The Superstars onthe masses made for quite an over the top evening. According to the weatherman, it was definitely colder this year compared to last but thanks to the great folks at Bakkhus, it mattered not the least!
February rain and clouds gave way to bright sunny skies as the Kemah Parade once again rolled through the lighthouse district. The larger crowds seemed happy to freeze down in Galveston at the Seawall parades that day--We opted to play it with the smart bunch and partied under T-Bone Tom's heated palapa. Jerry Diaz and Hannah's Reef did their magic and Southbound kept the room groovin'. Good mojo mention to Bob & Jane Head and all the supporters rallying to send five kids to Spina Bifeda camp this year!!! The center of the universe found it's way to Zone 504 that evening for Masquerading fun with the incredible Jabo playing only playing one set the entire night, a nonstop sizzling set of heart thumping zydeco swing that lasted the *entire* evening. Now *this* folks, is how to start off the month...
NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - Goes to Roger's Bar & Grill. We checked out Rhonda Meredith's write-up on the place in last month's SCENE Magazine and had to check things out ourselves. Boy did we pick a good one catching up with Heart & Soul. The last time we caught these cats at Jackie B's, we were blown away with their grit and talent and more so this evening when they let loose an entirely different genre of playlist totally in tune and perfectly played to suit local neighborhood Roger's crowd. BACK ON THE BEAT - Is Maribelle's and we found the place as busy as ever. Our last Trip to Casity was an acoustic afternoon on the Seagull patio where we scored them a solid thumbs up. This evening, we heard their electric version extending them across the full sonic spectrum-- Well done! Familiar progressive covers that withstand the test of time, virtuoso caliber lead licks, catch a Trip near you.
PATIO SEASON - Is around the corner and that means Jackie's Brickhouse. We stopped in to check out Rockit Bayou shaking up the South Shore bunch and never ceased to be amazed with how this place steps it up for special occasions with ease. Jackie, John, Rob & the entire staff has what's good down pat and with that, bring on the patio season!
TOURSTOP CLEAR LAKE - We're taking a different twist with this month's mentions to Cullen's Live and Scout Bar for bringing us touring acts The Flock of Seagulls, Saliva, Color Me Pretty and SIVA Addiction, to call out our superb local bands (Spicolis, Cymblem and Soul In Tension) for opening these fine shows. Often times, it's the opening act that brings the crowds and plays with the "let it all hang out" knob twirled three spins past the stops and this month, these super local crowd pleasers did just that admirably. Support you live local band -- Cheers!!!
OPEN MIC - At the Seagull this month was extremely good this month as was our chow at The Filling Station. Notables of the month in included Mike Shanks (frontman of the Misfit Toys) polishing up for what possibly could be a summer solo debut, the return of Hank Wolff (the last time we heard Hank perform was prior to his European tour), and good old fashion jamming and collaborating by the many area musicians. Play on!
THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BBQ CONTEST - this year set all sorts of attendance records and many of you were there this year supporting this annual scholarship fundraising event. We were a part with Southbound and The Original Longneck Cooking Company, scored ourselves one dandy of an outing and look forward to making this worthy annual event a part of our yearly agenda. As they say, do good, feel good, feel good, live good, live good, live long,,, Cheers to Spring! Be a part and we'll see you out on the SCENE!
